Protesters in Portland, Ore., decided to set fire to the city’s famous downtown Elk statue. The sculpture was donated to the city by Mayor David Thompson in 1900 and was created by American artist Roland Hinton Perry. The fountain and sculpture are officially designated as Portland Historic Landmarks by the city’s own Landmark Commission. The installation is formally known as the David P. Thompson Fountain

Vandals defaced the bronze statue. ‘Black Lives Matter’ signs and paint covered the famous elk and a large fire was set around it. It’s unclear why this statue has been targeted. It may just be the location of the statue so close to downtown.
